LIHU‘E — Swimming is one of the most popular activities on the Garden Island and officials with the Ocean Safety Bureau (OSB) have committed more of their time to assist residents and guests so they can continue to have a safe and enjoyable visit at the beach.
OSB announced that the operating hours at beaches with lifeguards have been extended to 10 hours a day beginning on May 1, 2024.
“To reduce the number of drownings and aquatic injuries across our island, these extended hours of coverage will enhance the safety of our residences and visitors who visit our beautiful beaches,” said Ocean Safety Bureau Chief Kalani Vierra.
Kaua‘i is the first county to extend its hours of coverage for its entire Ocean Safety Bureau program. The 12 full-time positions approved by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for all 365 days at all towers with lifeguards.
“This transition comes at a good time as our days are getting longer and summer months are almost here,” added Vierra.
Special thanks also go out to the Kaua‘i Fire Department, Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association and all supporters of this initiative.
Beachgoers are reminded to always check with a lifeguard tower for information on water conditions when unsure.
