Happy 180th birthday to native-born Hawaii President Sanford B. Dole. Born at Punahou (founded by his missionary father Daniel) April 23, 1844. Grew up with native playmates; spoke fluent Hawaiian and English; hanai’d native girl probably his biological daughter, whose descendants include Nainoa Thompson. Elected twice to Kingdom legislature representing Koloa. Appointed Supreme Court Justice by Kalakaua; reappointed by Lili’uokalani. Resigned honorably before overthrow; served as President of revolutionary Provisional Government and then Republic through 1899; letters addressed to him in 11 languages personally signed by at least 19 foreign Kings, Queens, & Presidents on 4 continents formally recognizing Republic as rightful successor government; negotiated Annexation to USA; first Governor of Territory through 1903; then Justice of Territorial Supreme Court. Buried at Kawaiaha’o Church. Shameful that today is not a State holiday.
