LIHU‘E — Officials from the Kaua‘i Emergency Operations Center have announced that operations remain partially active following last week’s flooding event on the Garden Island.
National Guard personnel and volunteers with the American Red Cross continue to asses damage on Kaua‘i and, as of April 17, officials have received 157 reports of damage to residences, including 12 businesses, and four farms.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) continues to work on the Wailua River Bridge on the mauka side (southbound) of Kuhio Highway. The two mauka lanes continue to be narrowed and will continue to be open during the day.
Nightly closures of the mauka Wailua Bridge for debris removal will continue from 8 p.m. through 5 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, and is expected to reopen at 5 a.m. on Friday, April 19.
Drivers should anticipate traffic delays during the nightly closures due to two-way traffic being limited on the makai-bound (northbound) Kuhio Highway.
The Niumalu Bridge and Niumalu Road near Hulemalu Road in Nawiliwili continue to remain closed due to safety concerns. Motorists are encouraged to use Hulemalu Road as a detour.
Apana Road in Wailua remains closed due to heavy ponding and the Wailua Forest Management Road (also known as Loop Road) is closed until further notice.
In Lihu‘e, Pua Loke Street, near Haleko Road, still remains closed due to a sinkhole.
In Po‘ipu, Ho‘one Road and Kuai Road near Po‘ipu Beach Park remains closed due to flooding. Additionally, the entire parking lot at Po‘ipu Beach Park is flooded.
In Kalaheo, Wawae Road, east of Kikala Road, is clear after a small landslide. However, drivers are advised to proceed with caution.
In Lawa‘i, Kuli Road has reports of debris impeding traffic.
In Waimea, Kanu Road, near Menehune Road, has heavy ponding impeding traffic.
Motorists are reminded that various closures islandwide remain ongoing. Motorists are also advised to continue to drive with caution and obey all closure and detour signs.

wish the flood related debris could go to an alternate site… so sad so many many trucks on the road west and our poor Kekaha landfill… need a more central flood debris site especially for Eastside rubbish….
