Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning entertainer Kekai Chock said the “old” ‘ukulele was better than the one Kehau Schimmelfennig won from the silent auction at the first Kaua‘i ‘Ukulele Festival held at the Kukui Grove Center … kudos to Kirk and Tora Smith of Hanalei Strings for braving all the rain to unload all those Kala Brand ‘ukulele (who got the sparkly one?), and kudos, Amy Hammond, Melissa McFerrin Warrack, Greg Askew, and yes, even Santa in Paradise for getting the first for Kaua‘i ‘Ukulele Festival off the ground and running despite the threat of Round 2 of heavy rains.

Down the way at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery, Toni Wass of the Kaua‘i Quilt Guild and Debbie Maddy of Texas were busy setting up the gallery for the Shibori workshops using indigo (Toni said they still have room for the April 19 to 21 workshops … just check vickysfabrics.com for more information).
Right on the heels of the Shibori workshops, Artist Maryann Donagher, who is the art instructor at Kaua‘i High School, will unveil the first Kaua‘i High School Art Show from April 23-27 at the KSA gallery with viewing hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
OK, so the rains let up enough, so hopefully we get a new vendor at the Kaua‘i Culinary Market (I still like the Pop-Up Farmers Market) at The Shops at Kuku‘iula.
And don’t forget all the weekend excitement that’s connected with the St. Theresa School carnival on Friday and Saturday nights. If you’re lucky, maybe Ursline Munar will be there.
