LIHU‘E — Officers with the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) will unveil a new fleet of vehicles next week that will help enhance patrol operations, response calls and performance.
KPD is introducing 10 new Chevrolet Silverado PPV pickup trucks specifically selected with advanced safety features suitable for the island terrain. The new trucks will ensure officers are prepared and have the proper resources to safely respond to any emergency.
“One of the advantages of enhancing our fleet with vehicles that are more capable off pavement is that it enables officers to reach remote areas swiftly and provide additional support during harsh weather conditions. These trucks make it easier to get help where it is needed, especially in urgent scenarios where time is a critical factor,” said KPD Chief Todd Raybuck.
KPD is the first police department in the state of Hawai‘i to acquire the Chevy due in part to Kaua‘i’s harsh road and weather conditions. The Chevy PPV is also equipped and capable of hauling up to 9,300 pounds.
“Kaua‘i spans more than 550 square miles, which mostly consists of unpopulated rural landscape,” added Raybuck.
These trucks will represent a significant edge due to their capabilities over previous patrol cruisers, in fact due to the COVID-19 pandemic and supply issues the force ultimately decided to halt the purchase of the Ford Police Interceptor Unit.
“The best part of being a police officer is that you never know what you are going to encounter each day. It’s unpredictable and exciting. These trucks allow us to be better equipped for those unexpected calls,” shared Officer Arnold Cayabyab.
