LIHU‘E — Waimea High School player Tavina Harris’ big bat and Kaua‘i High School miscues pushed the Menehune to an 11-4 victory over Kaua‘i High School in a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation softball contest on Wednesday night at Isenberg Park.
After striking out in her first at-bat, Harris marked the score books by getting on base through Red Raider errors that pushed a runner across the plate.
“Errors don’t count as runs batted in,” said Freddy Levinthol, a Kapa‘a coach and supporter. “But Harris, a transfer from Konawaena High School, has a great bat. During Waimea’s loss to Kapa‘a, Harris whacked a home run that they’re still looking for the ball.”
Harris had an opportunity to show off her power when she whacked a solo home run in the fifth inning en route to the sixth frame, when Waimea pushed six runs across the plate on four Red Raider miscues.
Kaua‘i answered with a home run of their own as substitute batter Mia, a member of the paddling team, whacked into a two-run homer to left field after taking the third pitch from Menehune hurler Taelor Camelo.
After Waimea broke the ice in the third frame with four runs, Kaua‘i came back with two runs in the home half of the inning. But that was the closest the Raiders got to the Menehune, as they came up with just two runs in answer to the six runs plated by Waimea in the sixth inning.
