LIHU‘E — A Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center inmate died from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run that occurred after he escaped from the facility.
Matthew J. Ornellas Jr., 33, of Kapa‘a, was struck by a vehicle on Kuhio Highway shortly after escaping from the facility on Friday, March 22. He succumbed to his injuries and died at Wilcox Medical Hospital in Lihu‘e on Thursday, March 28.
“The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR) extends its heartfelt condolences to the Ornellas’s family and loved ones,” said Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Director Tommy Johnson.
The investigation into the incident remains open and no arrest has been made. The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) encourages anyone who may have information about the hit-and-run to come forward.
