LIHU‘E — To strengthen the community and enhance public safety, law enforcement authorities have introduced residents to a new elevated opportunity for crime solving.
The Kauai Police Department (KPD) has established an initiative called ‘City Protect’ that allows residents and businesses to voluntarily register their external security cameras and their location.
Routinely when a crime occurs officers request for the community’s assistance or go door-to-door to ask questions and seek any cameras in the area. This process sometimes delays investigations and or the apprehension of the suspects.
However, having this important information readily available will save officers time and allow law enforcement to move forward with any investigation more efficiently.
“This program is designed to deter crime and promote public safety through a proactive partnership between residents, businesses and KPD,” shared Lieutenant Stacy Perreira. “By participating, you can actively contribute to the safety and security of your neighborhood.
Registration for the new ‘City Protect’ program is completely voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time.
KPD will not have any type of access to the security system or the camera, nor will the registered participants be obliged to provide video footage, if asked by police. Registration of cameras only informs police of their location to enhance the network within the community, while maintaining the individual’s privacy.
“Mahalo for your commitment to making Kaua’i a safer place to live, work, and thrive,” added Perreira.
