KEKAHA — Keiki from ages 1 through 12 years old are invited to participate in the free Easter Egg Project that will take place at Kekaha Ball Field, formerly known as Kekaha Faye Park and Neighborhood Center Complex.
Sponsored by numerous community organizations, the first wave of Easter egg hunters will be released at 8:30 a.m.
“This year, the plan is for more plastic, as well as real boiled and colored eggs to be placed on the field with the help of many,” said Eric Nordmeier of the West Kaua‘i Lions Club. “The event starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Kekaha ball field, but the actual start of gathering the eggs by age group will be at 8:30 a.m.”
In addition to the gathering of Easter eggs, the Salvation Army, Hanapepe Corps will be donating toys, E Ola Mau Na Leo O Kekaha will be providing bicycles, a pair of 10-foot by 10-foot tents and tables to store the toys, and Jackie Wong will be donating snacks for the helpers.
Other groups contributing to the Easter Egg Project include the Waimea High School Leo Club (that operates under the Lions Club umbrella), the Scouts of America, the Kekaha Agriculture Association, Dennis Eguchi, Stephanie Iona and others.
“This has grown to be a community project with each of us contributing to make this happen,” Nordmeier said. “This Easter Egg Project originally started as a West Kaua‘i Lion Club project many years ago in Hanapepe. Lion Coach Richard Ueoka chaired the event from the start. During the early 2000s, Hanapepe town (had) several Easter Egg projects by different entities. At that time, Kekaha (had) none so we moved to Kekaha.”
