NUKOLI‘I — E Kanikapila Kakou will close its 41st season on Monday by featuring three pivotal Hawaiian music artists at the Outrigger Kaua‘i Beach Resort from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Eric Lee, Moon Kauakahi and Mel Amina collectively have devoted more than 120 years to help shape the Hawaiian music scene through their ability to inspire, engage and foster a new generation of Hawaiian music practitioners. The program is presented by the Garden Island Arts Council.
Tickets for the EKK Monday session can be reserved online at ekk2024.eventbrite.com. General admission price is $20 for visitors and $10 for kama‘aina. Children ages 12 and under are free. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
A no-host bar and food concession will be provided throughout the evening by the Outrigger Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
Lee has earned multiple Na Hoku Hanohano awards while building an eclectic repertoire. An asset to many groups and a performer who has appeared around the globe, Lee has most recently been making music with Moon and Mel.
Kauakahi, a Nanakuli native of O‘ahu, devoted more than 40 years as a full-time key member of the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau. Now officially retired, Kauakahi still composes music and chants, and arranges music for other Hawaiian music groups.
Amina’s affinity for the ‘ukulele and slack key guitar led him to join his cousins Skippy and Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole, Moon Kauakahi and Sam Gray to form the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau that later gave rise to 3 Scoops of Aloha and the IZ Band. Amina is revered as a cultural ambassador and music mentor.
E Kanikapila Kakou, which had a theme of “Exploring the Significant Songs of Hawai‘i” for its 41st season, is supported in part by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawai‘i or grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
