LIHUE — A 32-year-old man was identified as the person killed in a single vehicle traffic incident on Friday, March 8.
Wiley Yoshioka, of, Lihu‘e, died after the 1991 Dodge truck he was driving northbound on Maluhia Road left the roadway and struck a tree, the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) said.
First responders arrived at the scene to find the vehicle had overturned on its side on the southbound roadway shoulder.
A passenger, who was identified as a 32-year-old woman from Lihu‘e, was treated at the scene by medics for nonlife-threatening injuries, and then transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihu‘e for further treatment. She was later released from the hospital.
Maluhia Road was closed in both directions for approximately three hours while the KPD Traffic Safety Section conducted its on-scene investigation.
“Speed and impairment appear to be suspected factors in the crash, however, the investigation remains ongoing,” the KPD said.
The incident marks the island’s third traffic fatality of 2024.
