PO‘IPU — The Island School boys and the Kaua‘i High School girls opened the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf circuit with wins on Saturday at Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.
The Voyagers, last year’s KIF champions, were led by Garrett Hadley, the day’s low individual scorer, in securing a team total of 338.
Kaua‘i High School finished the round with a team 360, followed by Kapa‘a High School at 371 and Waimea High School at 372.
On the girls side, Kaua‘i High School gcontrolled the Po‘ipu weather conditions to finish with a team total 282, followed by the Kapa‘a carding a 311.
“The KIF kicked off the 2024 golf season at the Po‘ipu Bay on Saturday,” said Paul Ito, a team parent, and coordinator for the Kaua‘i Junior Golf program. “The winds were up and scoring was difficult at the former home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, but Garrett Hadley of Island School was able to keep his ball on the straight and narrow and led the boys field with a solid round of 77, two strokes better than Kaua‘i High School’s Cody Nii who finished at 79.”
In the top five boys golfers, Chris Jobe of Island School finished a stroke back of Nii at 80 for the No. 3 spot. Lucas Summerhays finished No. 4 at 82 and Kapa‘a’s Jayvin Raquel settled at the No. 5 spot with an 82, tying with fellow Warrior Graham Morgan.
“On the girls side, Kaua‘i High School captured the win led by Leilani Redondo who shot the low individual girls’ score of 86,” Ito said. “Defending KIF girls individualist Amalia Abigania carded the next lowest score for the girls with a 97.”
In the top five girls individual scoring, Kapa‘a’s Juliette O’Shaughnessy finished a stroke back of Abigania at 98 to settle in the No. 3 spot. Sidney Ito finished at 99 and Mehana Gray of Kapa‘a filled in the No. 5 spot with a 104.
The next KIF golf round takes place at the Puakea Golf Course on Saturday. The first groupings tee off starting at noon.
On March 16, the KIF golfers will descend on the Ocean Course Hokuala with the same noon tee off time. Following a week off for spring break, the KIF golfers return to the greens at Princeville Makai Golf Course on March 30 with the first groups starting at noon.
