LIHU‘E — Registration for the University of Hawai‘i 4-H Program presents 2024 GrowEatThink Local 4-H Cooking Contest opened on March 1 online at www.go.hawaii.edu/AEf.
Registration will continue through March 25 with the entry deadline being March 31.
Hallie Cristobal, the Kaua‘i County 4-H, Youth and Intergenerational Program specialist, said the contest calls for the creation of a short video that feature a local commodity and demonstrates the successful completion of a healthful recipe. The contest is open to all Hawai‘i (not necessarily 4-H members) students in fifth through 12th grades. There is no cost to participate.
Noah de la Pena of Kaua‘i, who was an upper division contestant from 2023, said, “I learned how to use eggplant as a meat substitute, and also learned the health benefits of eating eggplants.”
Another 2023 winner was Jayden Hashizume of O‘ahu, who learned how long it takes to create a video.
“I learned that it doesn’t take a few hours of work,” said Hashizume, a lower division winner. “It takes days.”
Contestants need to create a five- to seven-minute video showing the compilation of a healthy recipe, demonstrate safe food handling and cooking techniques, include nutritional information, presentation and speaking skills, and a photograph.
For the 2023 contest, Noah de la Pena made “Eggplant Adobo,” and Jayden Hashizume created “Banana Cream Squares.”
Winners will be treated to an educational farm and culinary experience on O‘ahu on May 4.
