HA‘ENA — A trio of hikers were rescued after some apparent missteps led to injuries while traversing Kalalau Trail on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) received a report at approximately 12:30 p.m. about two male visitors from Georgia, who fell from the 11-mile trail somewhere in between Ke‘e Beach and Kalalau Beach along the Napali Coast.
“Shortly before 1:10 p.m., Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 spotted a person roughly 200 feet below the trail. Upon arrival, rescue personnel located two hikers; one had apparent injuries to the head and body, while the other was a female who did not report any injuries,” the KFD said.
After the two hikers were rescued, first responders found a third hiker on a hillside.
“He was assessed for apparent head injuries, airlifted on Air 1 and transported to Princeville Airport to awaiting American Medical Response (AMR) and KFD personnel. AMR medics continued treatment of the male hikers, transporting them to Wilcox Medical Center (in Lihu‘e),” the KFD said.
The scene was cleared shortly before 6:20 p.m. Personnel from the Hanalei fire station, as well as an on-duty battalion chief took part in the rescue.
Kalalau Trail is located within Napali Coast Wilderness State Park. The trail offers the only land access to the rugged and scenic coast.
