“Her piece is all plastic,” Jones said. “How do you get them to stick together?”
Like the pieces of Nativio’s artwork, Kukui Grove Center ties together the world of art and the experience of literacy on Saturday when the Read Across America program offers a free book for every child attending and participating in the literacy program that runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the food court area and center stage.
Children receive a golden ticket to redeem for a book while supplies last.
The KSA opens its Spring Show on Saturday, and is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. at the KSA gallery that is sandwiched between Small Fry and Bubbah’s Toy Box near the Keiki Korner play area.
“This is the first time we’ve had surfboard art,” Jones said. “There are two artists who brought in two pieces each. Traditionally, the shows open with the artists’ reception. We’re not doing this until later in the show that runs daily through March 29.”
One of the draws of Read Across America is the variety and quantity of reading-themed activities and giveaways punctuated with live book readings and keiki entertainment.
Read Across America also touts “Kaua‘i largest literacy event and book sale supporting our teachers in the classroom” when Sheila Bradley Books collaborates with Kumu’s Cupboard to offer book sales to customers living on a book desert.
And, if that’s not enough excitement, Girls Day, or Hinamatsuri, falls on Sunday when families pray for the happiness and prosperity of their girls, and the Girl Scouts celebrate its birthday on March 12.
