PO‘IPU — A 55-year-old Kalaheo man suffered fatal injuries after he was struck by a vehicle on Po‘ipu Road.
According to preliminary police reports, at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Saturday, a 2004 Toyota multi-purpose vehicle with two occupants was traveling westbound on Po‘ipu Road in the vicinity of the Kiahuna Shopping Center.
The vehicle then veered off the roadway and struck the 55-year-old male as he was walking along the westbound shoulder. His identity has not been released.
Bystanders near the scene found the man unresponsive and started administering CPR until first responders arrived and continued resuscitation efforts. He was transported to the Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihu‘e where he was pronounced dead.
The incident market the second traffic fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
The occupants of the vehicle were uninjured in the incident.
Po‘ipu Road was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes, while the Kaua‘i Police Department Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
Speed and impairment appear to be factors in the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
