LIHU‘E — An ‘Ele‘ele man was arrested for roughing up a nurse after he emerged from a state of unconsciousness at a local hospital.
Chay Ramirez, 22, was taken into custody on Feb. 21 nearly three months after the incident happened at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea on Nov. 29, 2023, the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) said.
Ramirez had been transported to the hospital after first responders found him unconscious at an undisclosed location.
Once conscious, Ramirez allegedly made threatening remarks toward hospital staff and “inflicted serious bodily injury upon a nurse by biting her as she was attempting to administer medication,” the KPD said.
Ramirez was subsequently arrested, and then released pending investigation of the incident. Such a release can happen when more time is needed, then the 48 hour holding period in police custody, in order for authorities to investigate a case.
After the investigation concluded, the findings were submitted to the County of Kaua‘i Office of the Prosecuting Attorney and an arrest warrant was issued. Ramirez is charged with assault in the second degree. His bail is set at $25,000.
“We hold health care professionals in high regard for their selfless devotion and expertise. It is unacceptable for them to feel unsafe when they are dedicated to saving lives and promoting well-being,” said KPD Chief Todd G. Raybuck in a statement.
“Assault is a highly punishable offense that carries significant repercussions. The Kaua‘i Police Department firmly stands against any acts of violence targeted at health care professionals and will take necessary action against such behavior. It is imperative that our health care professionals are not subjected to any form of threat or intimidation while carrying our their duties.”
