LIHU‘E — A large swell is forecast to create some huge waves on the North Shore and West Shore of Kaua‘i over the next couple of days.
LIHU‘E — A large swell is forecast to create some huge waves on the North Shore and West Shore of Kaua‘i over the next couple of days.
The swell prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high surf warning on Wednesday. The warning, which may be extended, dropped or modified, is in effect until 6 p.m. on Friday.
Surf of 40 feet to 50 feet is forecast along the North Shore. Surf of 25 feet to 35 feet is forecast along the West Shore
“A significant, extra large northwest (320 degree) will arrive late (Wednesday) and rapidly build down the island chain Thursday. This swell will result in surf rapidly rising to warning levels along most north and west facing shores,” the National Weather Service said.
“In addition, a swell of this size will adversely impact coastal areas, especially during high tide Thursday evening. Preparations should be made for significant coastal impacts as ocean water runs up and inundates beaches and potentially affects coastal properties and roadways.”
The high surf warning also prompted the Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) to remind residents and visitors, alike, that entering the water in the impacted area is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death.
“Beachgoers are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline,” the KFD said on Wednesday.
