HONOLULU — Sawyer Rogoff, with an assist from Titus Sweitzer in the second half, made history for the Island School Voyagers during the Motiv8 Foundation Hawai‘i High School Division II boys soccer tournament that at Waipio Soccer Complex on O‘ahu.
Rogoff’s foot found the back of the net past Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i goalkeeper Jacob Aiona to give the Voyagers a 1-0 victory to earn the Division II championship trophy following the upset win over the tournament’s top-seeded team.
“This was a real formidable team,” said Island School coach Sean Magoun. “They were real tough. We couldn’t break through until 10, or 15 minutes into the second half.”
The Voyagers, seeded No. 3 in championship play, opened its voyage on a Rogoff goal on Thursday when Island School beat the Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy 1-0 on a goal that popped up with five minutes before the break.
Rogoff continued to add to the Voyagers’ winning recipe on Friday when he scored in the 14th minute for the third-seeded team, which finished by upsetting the No. 2 seed PAC-5 squad, 3-1, in Waipio. In that victory, Rogott was joined by Hunter Kerry who found the net in the 23rd minute to answer the PAC-5 response in the 18th minute on a goal by Nolean Bowler. Eddie Silliman got the insurance goal in the second half.
The victory left the Voyagers with a 12-1-1-tie record.
Additionally, the HHSAA named Voyager athlete Micah Lindman as the Most Outstanding Player on the Division II All-Tournament listing, late Saturday. Other Voyagers making the all-tournament team included William Buford, Ignacio Elzardia, Javin Hennessy, Ikaika Havas, Sawyer Rogoff, and Titus Schweitzer.
“This (state DII title) was a long time in coming,” Magoun said. “It was a true team effort from everybody, Coach Mark Ure, Coach Cola, the players, and especially the fans. It belongs to everyone.”
