KILAUEA — The Kaua‘i Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, known as KSPCA, announced on Monday, the addition of Mirah Horowitz as president of the organization’s board.
Horowitz previously served as the executive director of the Kaua‘i Humane Society from October 2018 through October 2020.
“Mirah made an incredible difference for Kaua‘i’s animals during the time at the Kaua‘i Humane Society,” said Mindy Smith, a KSPCA board member. “KSPCA is excited to have her expertise as we work to support pets and pet owners across this island.”
She currently serves as the chief executive officer of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, a nonprofit she founded in 2009 that has saved the lives of more than 27,000 dogs and cats.
More recently, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, in collaboration and partnership with Greater Good Charities, and Southwest Airlines, coordinated an airlift of more than 100 shelter pets, including more than 30 dogs and more than 70 cats, from Maui to Portland, Oregon, to help the Maui Humane Society cope with the wildfires that happened on Aug. 8.
The airlift also brought in hundreds of Good Packs filled with survival and comfort supplies.
“Mirah founded and runs one of the largest foster-based organizations in the nation, as well as a successful low-cost spay/neuter clinic,” said Dr. Ranaella Steinberg, the KSPCA executive director. “The need for these types of programs here on Kaua‘i has never been greater, and we look forward to working with Mirah to develop them.”
