LIHU‘E — Waimea High School boys basketball picked up its third straight win in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation second round with a 56-53 edge over the Red Raiders at Clem Gomes Gym on Tuesday night.
Kapa‘a High School, holder of the KIF first round with a 5-1 record, improved to 2 wins and a loss following the Warriors’ 74-41 victory over the Island School Voyagers at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the campus of Island School.
During the junior varsity match at Island School, the Warriors claimed a 72-39 victory behind the high pointing of CeeJay Jenkins, who pocketed 17 points and a 16-point contribution from Siotame Malafu. Tulosi Masaniai finished with nine points on three bombs from outside the 3-point arc.
Piko Vaughn topped the JV Voyager effort on 15 points, which included a trio of long-distance scores. Jonathan Primeaux added 10 points split evenly between the halves.
JV scores for the contest waged at Clem Gomes Gym were not available on scoringlive.com, which provided information on the varsity match where Waimea edged Kaua‘i in all four quarters.
Daniel Kaohelauli‘i-Kala and Jeydon Moises led the Menehune attack with 15-point apiece contributions with Lindcey Constantino adding seven marks and Kelani Lewis finishing with six points.
Joshua Rego topped the Kaua‘i effort with a game-high 19 points, including a pair of 3-balls. Carmen Holt-Ho followed with 14 points, and Isaac Mirey added 11 points, including a long-distance ball.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium, the Warriors surged from a 17-10 first quarter and never looked back at the Voyagers.
Warrior Tristen Scully led the victory with a game-high 24 points that included six 3-balls, a bucket, and going four-for-four at the charity stripe, including nailing all three shots from a foul in 3-point land.
Ty Kamoku, filling in for a sick Warrior, added 13 points, including a free throw after which he crumpled to the floor. Emry Piturachsatit came off the bench for 10 points, including a pair of 3-balls that triggered eruptive enthusiasm from the Kapa‘a fan base.
With the victory, Kapa‘a next hosts Kaua‘i High School on Friday at Bernice Hundley Gym. Island School will make the trek to Clem Gomes Gym to face the Menehune. The JV games tip off from 5:30 p.m. at both sites with the varsity contests to follow.
