The Kaua‘i Police Department (KFD) said on Saturday it was recently made aware of social media posts alleging an attempted kidnapping near a school in Kapa‘a. The police department did not name the school, nor did it disclose the social media site.
But the KPD took umbrage with an apparent claim that it did not address the alleged crime, saying it followed up with school officials and was unable to corroborate information contained in a school memo.
“There have been no attempted kidnapping incidents reported to KPD, and the inaccurate narrative claiming a lack of action on KPD’s part is simply false,” said Kalani Ke, assistant chief of the KPD’s Patrol Services Bureau, in a statement.
“Our officers are mothers and fathers first, and we take these accusations to heart. While we have not been able to verify the facts alleged in recent social media posts, it is a good opportunity for schools and families to discuss student safety.”
Local authorities also took the opportunity to issue a list of safety tips for people to practice, including being alert and aware of one’s surroundings and protecting oneself against misinformation.
Authorities also encouraged parents to educate their children on how to deal with strangers and to get help if they feel unsafe.
“Please immediately report any suspicious activity to KPD. Reports and inquiries are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated,” Ke said. “If there is ever an active threat to the public, KPD will notify the community with verified information. We appreciate the community’s continued vigilance to keep our keiki safe.”
