LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School scored three second-half goals to shut down Island School, 3-0, in a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls soccer match at the Island School field that was peppered with strong winds.
Both teams battled before an audience that was bundled up against the cold winds in the Voyager wahine’s final home game, which was tied 0-0 at the half.
Using the break time to adjust to the tie, both teams emerged onto the field and continued to feel each other out until the game clock estimator displayed 22 minutes remaining in the 80-minute match.
Kaua‘i’s Kyla Racca took a cross in front of the goalmouth and fired at close range for the first of her two goals in the match.
Despite several sojourns into Kaua‘i scoring territory, the Red Raiders defense held strong until Kyla — there is a Kianah Racca on the team roster — struck her second goal in the 65th minute.
Kaua‘i’s Keira Caoagas, anchoring the Red Raiders defense with booming kicks out of trouble in the strong winds, iced the win on a goal from about 20 yards out in the final five minutes of play.
With just one more game remaining on the KIF girls soccer calendar, Kaua‘i High School improved to 5 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties, excluding results from the Jan. 13 games, according to Scoring Live.com.
Kapa‘a High School, who plays Waimea on Wednesday at Hanapepe Stadium, sits with 5 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties, excluding results from the Jan. 13 contests.
Waimea High School is at 3 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie.
Island School girls have 1 win, 9 losses and 1 tie.
The next KIF soccer games will take place on Saturday when Kaua‘i hosts Waimea at Vidinha Stadium and Kapa‘a will host Island School at Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
