Sarah Kawaiwaionapua Kaneholani
Sarah Kawaiwaionapua Kaneholani, born on June 1, 1973, of Anahola, passed away peacefully at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Nov. 3, 2023, at the age of 50 after a 10-year-long battle with cancer.
Sarah was preceded in death by her father David Kaneholani Sr., paternal grandparents Herbert and Elizabeth Kaneholani, maternal grandparents Charles and Haruko Kiilau, numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.
She is survived by her mother Charlotte Kiilau Kaneholani, companion Clement, children Samuel, Jasen and Bruce Kaneholani, Dawn-Lei (Hoku) Ricciardi, Kehau (Jose) Santiago, Olinda (Kekoa) Figueroa, Ali‘i (Xannie) Kaneholani, Taisen Kaneholani, Kaikoa and Kahea Ujano-Kaneholani, siblings Masao (Lehua) Iopa, Mollie “Pua” Gardner, Charla (John) Brock, David Kaneholani Jr., Maycia (Guy) Matsuyoshi and Kealaonaona Iopa, grandchildren Josiah, Johnny, Shanalyn, Kealohi, Kaimalie, Anela, Masina, Akela, Ha‘aheo, Kealoha, Alaka‘i, Keelan, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her hanai mother Mervelee “Midge” Asai, numerous hanai children including Jimmy (Nikki) Alisna, Alijah Barino, Shy Kaneholani, Loke (Corey) Rivera, Shana (Calvin) Kuriki, hanai grandchildren Makalapua, Jaysie-Jean, Corey, Mason-Dean, Breeana, Brittney, Shane, Bryanna, Shaisten, Bryancie, Jaevn and Noah.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at Anahola Beach Park. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by service at 10 a.m.

Elizabeth ‘Lisa’ Nui Garma Carvalho
Elizabeth “Lisa” Nui Garma Carvalho, of Kapa‘a, passed away on Nov. 12, 2023, at Wilcox Medical Center at the age of 77. She was born on Feb. 3, 1946, in Lihu‘e. She was the owner of Shanora of Kaua‘i, a retired seamstress and a cashier at Wailua Country Store.
She was preceded in death by father Nomeriano Carlos, mother Nora Dias and sister Dorothy Yatsuoka.
She is survived by husband Gilbert C. Carvalho, son Norbert “Keone” (Cheryl) Garma of Lihu‘e, daughters Noralyn (Tamio) Hasegawa of Kapa‘a, Shanlee (James) Jimenez of Lihu‘e, grandchildren Tamalyn Hasegawa, Tyren Hasegawa, Torrie Hasegawa, Tyrus (Cori) Hasegawa, Ashlee (Kiah) Imai, Jamilee (Wayne) Jimenez, Krystian (Mikki) Garma, Caylee Garma, great-grandchildren Dayden Paahao, Saydee Paahao, Kian Imai, brothers Norman (Lourdes) Carlos of Kapa‘a, Sal (Isabella) Talha of Carson, California, William (Radrik) Carlos of Lihu‘e, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Daniel Wilbur Contrades Sr., 90, of Nanakuli, passed away peacefully on Nov. 17, 2023 at the Queen‘s Medical Center – West O‘ahu. He was born on Aug. 30, 1933 in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i and retired from Ameron HC&D where he worked as a ready mix driver on O‘ahu.
He was preceded in death by his wife Emmeleen “Chic” Haunani Keyes Contrades, great-grand daughter Chloe Kaleiu‘iohaunani Kahaunaele Marquez, son-in-law Israel Padilla, sister Myrtle (Frank) Napoleon, brothers Peter (Anita) Contrades, Ervin (Mercy) Contrades Sr., and Waldemar Contrades Sr.
He is survived by his son Daniel “Kaniela” W. Contrades Jr., daughters Rainnette (Glenn) Nagasako, Ginger Contrades, Danielle Contrades-Padilla, Lorna “La” Contrades, Emmeleen Contrades-Eiser, Sheila (Guy) Dickinson, brothers Joseph (Betty Jane) Contrades, Lester (Richard) Contrades, sisters Imogene Richards, Alicia (Tony) Fernandez, sister-in-law Patsy Contrades, 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and two great-great- grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024 at the Lydgate Park (big) Pavilion. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Services to follow. Casual attire is suggested.
Clayton Hung Tuck Yoshiwo Sui
Clayton Hung Tuck Yoshiwo Sui, of Lihu‘e, passed away on Dec. 19, 2023, at the age of 63. He was born in Honolulu on May 6, 1960, and raised there, never expecting to live on Kaua‘i, an island he grew to love. Clayton served as a chaplain for 26 years at Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center.
He was preceded in passing by his parents Thomas and Edna Sui and his siblings Leroy Sui and Glenice Yoneda.
Clayton is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Michelle Sui, his devoted children Zachary Sui, Rachel (Joshua) Sui, brother Colburn (Chong Ha) Sui, sister Valvia (Bill) McCormack.
Clayton put his heart and soul into his ministry at KCCC. He was a wise, thoughtful, and dedicated servant of Christ. He succeeded in turning around for the good the lives of many inmates.
Clayton released prisoners from the darkness, and in serving the least and the outcast at KCCC did it all for Jesus [Isaiah 61:1-3, Matthew 25:40]. At the front of his Bible Clayton placed Hebrews 13:3 [Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison]. Clayton and Shelly viewed all they ministered to as their own children.
Clayton fed his blue-ribbon chili to multitudes across Kaua‘i and around the world.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at Kalaheo Missionary Church, 4480 Hokua Road, Kalaheo, Hawai‘i. The family requests that all attending wear Dallas Cowboy grey and blue colors.

Rossiter Ronald Kamealoha Oana, Sr., of Kalaheo, passed away on Jan. 4, 2024, in Kalaheo at the age of 84. He was born on Jan. 23, 1939, in Lihu‘e. He was a telephone linesman with Hawaiian Tel Company and a long-time musician with the Punuas.
He was preceded in death by parents Stanley Manaia Oana, Sr. and Elizabeth Leialoha Kanoho Oana, wife Marjorie Napua Rodrigues Oana, son Rosswell Raoul Kaleolani Oana, granddaughter Weslyn Jerves, grandson Don Sadomiano, brother Stanley Manaia (Smokey) Oana, Jr., sisters Eleanor Leinaala Carvalho and Flora Ornellas.
He is survived by wife Victoria Navarro Oana, sons Rossiter R. K. On Nov. 30, 2023, Nathan Ken Louis, of 4484 Punee Road, Oma‘o, Hawai‘i, passed away at the age of 66 years old.
He is survived by his brother Matthew J. (Avanell Kalalau-Louis) Louis, nephew Matthew A. Louis, grandnephew Anthony Louis, grandnieces Lily Louis, Diane (Nagahisa) Louis and niece Bridget L. Louis.
He was predeceased by his loving parents Anthony Nelson Louis and Hiroko (Kakuda) Louis.
A celebration of life with viewing from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by Mass service and burial on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at St. Raphael Catholic Church, located at 3011 Hapa Road, Koloa, Hawai‘i.

Felipe Restituto Bumagat
Felipe Restituto Bumagat, born on Aug. 23, 1928, in Binsang, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, Philippines.
He retired from the Bacarra Ilocos Norte Police Force before moving to Hawai‘i. He also retired as a ground maintenance at Kaua‘i Grove Farm Company in 1998.
A World War II veteran of the United States Armed Forces in the Far East, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal on Oct. 12, 2019.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Avelina U. Bumagat, father Silvino Cariaga of Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, mother Gregoria Bumagat Medrano of Bacarra, Ilcos Norte, Philippines, brothers Felicisimo Cariaga, Virginio Cariaga, Juan Cariaga, Hilario Cariaga of Pasuquin, Florentino Cariaga of New Jersey, Pedro Medrano, Ernesto Medrano of Bacarra, sisters Genoveva Cariaga, Anselmo Cariaga of Pasuquin and Filomena Medrano.
He is survived by his wife Virgy Bumagat, children Rozel (Wayne) Ebinger, Henry (Delia) Bumagat, Delia (Frederico “Jun”) Astrologio, Joanie (Tino Hidalgo) Bumagat, Marina (Lance) Nojima, Teresita Aleli (Sammy Cadiz) Ruena Bumagat, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A service will be held on Friday, Jan. 16, 2024, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m., with a celebration of life at 6 p.m. The family requests casual attire.

Michael G. Perel
Michael G. Perel (Mike) of Katy, Texas, passed away at home on Dec. 7, 2023, at the age of 78.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Helaine R. (Goldman) Perel, daughter Sandi (Kevin) O’Shaughnessy, sons Kenneth (Nathlei) Perel, Matthew (Rebecca) Perel, Beau (Kathleen) Gribbin, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Michael was born in Georgia and raised in New York and New Jersey. He was an accountant in New York City prior to owning and operating a seafood packing plant in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Michael was heavily involved in the community of Cape Cod. He was appointed by the Department of the Interior and served as an advisor for the Cape Cod National Seashore advocating for the public’s rights to access beaches for fishing and recreation. He was a Provincetown, Massachusetts, Selectman, an elected position. Additionally, he offered his services to many local organizations including mentoring and tutoring at the local high school. Always an athlete, Mike had many hobbies including race car driving, musician, saltwater fisherman, and ice hockey player, coach, and referee.
In 1995 he and Helaine relocated to Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i where they resided until 2019. While on Kaua‘i, Michael first worked for Gaylord’s restaurant as controller, then at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital (HHSC) as regional CFO until he retired in 2017. He also served on the Hawai‘i Grand Jury. Michael embraced the Kaua‘i community and immersed himself in the local culture. When not working, you could find Michael on his mountain bike, salsa dancing or teaching, or as a firearms instructor. Mike had a great sense of humor and was well loved in the Kaua‘i community.
Mike was laid to rest on Dec. 8, 2023, at Emanu El Memorial Park in Houston, Texas. He will be fondly remembered by all of those he touched with his generous and witty nature.
Melaney Ha‘o Bergado
Melaney Ha‘o Bergado passed away on Dec. 11, 2023, at the age of 61. She was born in Lihu‘e, Hawai‘i, on Sept. 12, 1962, and worked as an escrow manager for Security Title.
She was preceded in passing by son James Kalani-Ha‘o Bergado, parents Juan Bergado, Emilia Tumacder and stepfather Ricarte Tumacder.
Melaney is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Lawrence Ha‘o, son John (Carin) Ha‘o Bergado, siblings Marylyn (Bradford) Lee, James (Jan) Bergado, stepsister Sandra (Kendall) Sagisi, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024, at Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihu‘e. Visitation begins at 3 p.m. followed by services at 3:30 p.m.

Daniel Keolamana Ka‘aumoana
Daniel Keolamana Ka‘aumoana, of Kekaha, passed away on Dec. 28, 2023, at the age of 15. He was born on Sept. 16, 2008, in Waimea, Kaua‘i. He was a student at Waimea High School.
He was preceded in death by his grandma Merla-Ann Ka‘aumoana.
He is survived by his father David (Deanna) Manu Ka‘aumoana of Waimea, mother Tiffany “Ulu” (Wesley) Schmidt of Kekaha, brothers David Moses Ka‘aumoana of Waimea, Kupa‘a Silva of Kekaha, Kawelo Silva of Kekaha, sisters Angel Ka‘aumoana of Waimea, Ka‘ena Silva of Kekaha, Kailea Alquiza of Waimea, Kilileo Alquiza of Waimea, Kahiau Ka‘aumoana of Waimea, grandparents Keala Niheu of Kekaha, Leon (Momi) Schmidt of Kaumakani, great-grandmother Kaleimomi Schmidt, uncles Joshua Ka’aumoana of O‘ahu, Hoku Schmidt of Kekaha, aunts Sarah (Nick) Ka‘aumoana of Kalaheo, Nicole (Kainalu) Ka‘aumoana of Waimea, Keala (Neill) Manuma of Kekaha, Kanani (Benjamin) Apilado of Kaumakani, and numerous cousins.

Helen Leonani Hanohano, of Niumalu, Kaua‘i, peacefully joined the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital. She was 80 years old and born on May 9, 1943, in Lihu‘e, Hawai‘i. Helen was a Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend. She will be remembered as the life of the party, for her contagious laugh, beautiful voice and giving heart.
Helen grew up in Niumalu and enjoyed the simple joys of life. As a young adult she worked at The Pineapple Cannery, Kalena Bar, Hideaway Bar, and HAPS Hideaway Bar. She later became a bus driver for the County of Kaua‘i and retired after 29 years.
Helen was preceded in death by her long time companion Walter P. H. Emmsley, parents Lyma P. Hanohano, Mary Magdalene Kaiwi (Kolo) Chow and step-father Kut Chong Chow, sister Ethel (George) Suinn, sister Leona Kay Ferraro, sister Karen (Joseph) Koko, sister Norma McKenzie, brother-in-law Henry Nakao and grandson Chad Kalani Chow.
She is survived by her sons Wesley (Laurie) Chow, Russell (Jill) Chow, Clesson Hanohano, Mansfield Hanohano, Kennison (Jenelle) Hanohano, brother Arthur (Joy) Chow, sister Donna Nakao, brother-in-law Phillip Ferraro, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Helen’s celebration of life services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Niumalu Canoe Club in Kalapaki, Kaua‘i. Visitation will begin from 9 to 11 a.m., services and lunch will follow.
