HA‘ENA — A New York man was identified as the hiker who died after he apparently had a misstep and fell off a section of trail at Hanakapi‘ai Falls.
Matthew Wu, 30, was on the trail at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Sunday when the incident occurred, the Kauai Police Department (KPD) said on Tuesday. He was located roughly 30 feet below Hanakapi‘ai Falls.
“The Kaua‘i Police Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Wu,” said Kennison Nagahisa, acting captain of the KPD’s Investigative Services Bureau, in a statement on Tuesday.
Personnel with the Kaua‘i Fire Department and Air 1 assisted in recovering Wu. An investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is pending.
Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, and the Visitor Aloha Society of Kauai, a nonprofit group that provides emergency needs for visitors, are assisting Wu’s family.
The KPD also issued a reminder to the public to use caution when hiking trails on Kaua‘i, particularly in wet weather.
That trail is not a hiking trail for tourist. Off site. Not listed.
