LIHU‘E — The Island School Voyagers boys basketball team piled up 60 points, its highest production during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season, against Kaua‘i High School on Tuesday at the Raiderdome, the name assigned to the Kaua‘i High School gymnasium by sports fans.
Fueled by Lucas Summerhayes’ game-high 21 points, including five bombs from outside the 3-point arc, the Voyagers’ effort fell short, 74-60 to the Red Raiders, who with the win, improved to 3-2 on the season.
Earlier in the evening, the Red Raider junior varsity picked up a 51-46 win over the Voyagers behind the high point of Nickolas Gandez, who finished with 13 points, including a 3-ball. Daelin Grace added 11 points.
Kade McCracken finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Voyagers. Jonathan Primeaux added 13 points and Piko Vaughn finished with 10.
The varsity Voyagers entered the Raiderdome with strong spirits after picking up their first season win on Saturday when Island School was three points better than Waimea at Wilcox gym.
But the Red Raiders were ready, and outgunned the Voyagers in three of four quarters. The Voyagers squeezed out a 29-13 final stanza against the Red Raiders behind Summerhayes launching four of his five 3-balls in that stanza. Garrett Hadley added six points in the production.
Voyager Aiden Alvarez, finishing the contest with 12 points, including a first quarter trey, was limited to just two points in the final surge, and Matthew Dobashi was able to launch 3-balls in the first and last quarters during the effort.
Joshua Rego topped the Kaua‘i scoring with 20 points, including a trey in the second stanza. It was Rego’s most productive period in the contest with 11 points.
Cameron Holt-Ho added 12 points along with his defensive hustle, and Bryan Brown peeled off a trio of treys and a bucket for 11 points.
Over at Bernice Hundley Gym, the Kapa‘a Warriors clinched the KIF first round by squeaking past Waimea 56-54, behind Tristen Scully’s 17 points, including five treys.
The Menehune came from a 14-9 first quarter deficit to outgun Kapa‘a in the second frame to take a 26-24 advantage at the break. Kapa‘a rebounded by outshooting the Menehune 15-9 in the third quarter, and held on despite the Menehune enjoying a 19-17 final stanza.
Kelani Lewis notched high point honors for Waimea with 21 points, including four 3-balls. Lindcey Constantino and Daniel Kaohelauli‘i-Kala each added eight points.
Reimel Camacho added 11 points toward the Kapa‘a win and Ty Kamoku finished with 10 points. Keaka Kauhane and Aidan Johnson both finished with seven points.
On the JV court, Kapa‘a JV roared to a 74-50 win over the Waimea behind 26 points by Shayden Mandel, including four treys, and 16 points frjom CeeJay Jenkins.
Kaleb Parraga netted 16 points to lead the Menehune.
Waimea will host Kaua‘i on Saturday to close out the KIF first round. Kapa‘a, improving to 5-0 in the first round following its Tuesday win, will visit Island School on Saturday.
The JV contests tip off starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity games.
