“This is not very much,” said Karen Shigemoto of the Hawai‘iUSA ‘ohana. “We’re also adding about 250 of our logo-ed bags for the students to use. We just ordered them, so we’ll have them available as soon as they arrive.”
The Project Grad awarding took place as a pair of 11th graders approached the teller’s station to transact their personal business on a break from school on the first day back from winter break.
This led to the question, what about the other public high schools, and their respective Project Grad programs?
“Maybe they’re not aware they can get help from the foundation,” said Gretchen Hashimura, the Kaua‘i representative to the foundation. “One of their leaders needs to inquire about whether or not their program is eligible for consideration.”
Karen agreed, noting an email inquiry from one of the Kaua‘i High School Project Grad program resulted in the extra award of the logo-ed bags for graduating high school seniors.
Project Grad is celebrated following the school’s commencement ceremonies and allows the graduates an opportunity to spend the night together in a safe environment.
