WAIMEA — The results of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls basketball Round 1 could be determined on Wednesday, when Kapa‘a High School’s Warriors travel to Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea to face the Menehune.
The possible winner of Round 1 comes on the heels of an exciting week with the Waimea and Kapa‘a teams setting a new high point scoring standard during the season that started on Nov. 30.
On Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, the Menehune’s junior varsity and varsity squads broke 80 points in their victories over Kaua‘i High School.
The Waimea JV took an 83-11 win over the Red Raiders behind 28 points launched by La‘akea Kauwe and 16 marks cranked by Cyani Bagaoisan-Rita. Kaua‘i JV marked six points from Jaelyn Maeda Kalani, three parks from Lily Corpuz and a pair from Tiare Kaui.
Menehune varsity guard Hailey Mata matched the JV performance with 28 points, including launching four bombs from outside the 3-point arc, to lead the Waimea varsity to an 86-22 win over Kaua‘i who got six points from Lailah Kalani, and two of its starters fouling out.
The scenario reenacted on Friday, Dec. 22, when the Kapa‘a varsity handed Kaua‘i High School an 81-29 loss at Bernice Hundley Gym where the Raiders lost three of its players due to fouls.
Warrior center Olivia Malafu topped the Kapa‘a scoring with 26 points. Guard Taira Samiano finished with 18 points after being limited to just one three ball. The Warriors’ other guard Skylyn Fagarang finished with 13 points, including one from outside the arc as Kapa‘a was only able to launch a total of three treys.
Kaua‘i High School answered the challenge by launching five treys, including a pair from Jazlyn Corpuz. Kamaile Manibog, launching one of the treys in the opening frame, finished by leading the Red Raiders charge with eight points before being buzzed out of the contest.
Sophia Badua added seven marks, and Corpuz finished with six points along with Cheyley Jacobs, who fouled out after contributing six marks.
Earlier in the Friday evening, the Kapa‘a JV marked a 42-15 victory over the JV Red Raiders who entered the break with 0 points.
Kehakea Lawhead topped the JV Warriors scoring with 13 points, followed by Aedyn Umalla ending with 11 points, including one three ball.
Maddie Perreira topped the JV Raiders’ scoring on eight points, followed by Naveah Eclipse adding three marks.
Tip off for the JV game on Wednesday is 5:30 p.m., followed by the start of the varsity contest 25 minutes after the end of the JV contest.
