HANALEI — Getting to Hanalei in the middle of the night is going to be a bit of chore for folks when the new year rolls around on the North Shore.
That’s because the Hawaii Department of Transportation is planning full nightly closures of Hanalei Bridge beginning Jan. 2 in order shore up the connector along Kuhio Highway. The closures will be between Hanalei Plantation Road and Ohiki Road.
After the initial week of work, closures will continue on a Sunday through Thursday schedule from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. the following day.
“The $2.9 million project will replace the timber decking, steel bolts and corroded steel members of Hanalei Bridge. The steel structure of the bridge will be prepared and repainted. The closures will continue Sunday through Thursday nights throught the projected completion of the project in February,” the Department of Transportation said.
“This stage of the project includes decking refurbishment, so first responders will be staged on either side of the bridge as they will not be able to drive across the bridge while the deck is being replaced.”
Electronic message boards will be posted along the route with closure information. All bridge work is weather permitting.
The last replacement sure didn’t last long! They could also stop more than half of the road closures by making the raid road high by the bamboo patch.
