LIHU‘E — The inclement weather of a couple days ago created a mess with the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation (KIF) soccer scheduling.
Boys varsity soccer scheduled for Wednesday could not be played, as rain came down by bucketfuls at the time the games were supposed to start.
Elsewhere, the status of the girls basketball games scheduled for Clem Gomes Gym on Wednesday night is unknown at press deadlines.
The rained out varsity boys soccer match will be played on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium starting at 10 a.m. That match will feature the Kapa‘a varsity boys visiting the host Kaua‘i varsity boys in a single contest.
According to Kapa‘a Athletic Director Greg Gonsalves, the varsity boys match with Waimea visiting Island School was also rained out on Wednesday. According to Gonsalves, that contest will be played at the end of the KIF soccer season, only if it has bearing on the KIF championship.
On Tuesday, during the varsity girls series, both contests — Waimea visiting Island School and Kapa‘a visiting Kaua‘i at Vidinha Stadium — battled to stalemates.
Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i varsity girls wrangled to a 0-0 final at Vidinha, and at the Island School field that was soggy from an earlier passing rain, the Menehune and Voyagers battled to a 1-1 deadlock as both sides countered each other.
In the first half, the Menehune, on an offensive posture led by the efforts of its forwards Kendra Knapp and Kendra Suga, suffered a breakdown in movement when the Voyagers capitalized on a defensive break to move the ball downfield with a goal netted by Island School’s McKenna Kerry in the 13th minute for a 1-0 go-ahead.
Waimea continued to work its offense and countered that score when Chaslee Aki found the net in the 22nd minute to knot the contest, 1-1, at the break. That score proved to be the final as both teams continued to counter each other in the second half.
Following the makeup contest on Saturday, KIF soccer enjoys the winter break until Jan. 6, 2024, when Waimea makes the trek to Bryan J. Baptiste (BJB) Sports Complex to face Kapa‘a High School. Island School Voyagers will visit Kaua‘i High School at Vidinha Stadium, where the varsity girls kick off at 2 p.m. and the varsity boys follow at 4 p.m.
The junior varsity boys kick off at 10 a.m. at the BJB, followed by the varsity girls starting at 11:45 a.m. The varsity boys closing out the day starting at 1:45 p.m.
