Lorena Silva, of Opu Road Farm, said she didn’t know how to act when all those people bought out her supply of kadomatsu (she said making the kadomatsu is not easy, it’s hard work) during Pau Hana Market on Monday, where Chef Steven Nishi and the Kaua‘i Community College culinary arts students Victoria Mendoza, Tory Refamonte, Mie Lorenzo, Dianne Martin, Mason Yoshimori and Noah Denbeau — they’re the same crew with the addition of Bronson Oliver that creates between 500 to 1,000 pounds of food that’s shipped to Maui for relief from the recent wildfires! — offered up Beef Smash Burger Salad and Kaua‘i Shrimp Salad for customers at the weekly market.

Kudos and congratulations to Lisa Makaneole and Ken Pharhoitkul on the “soft opening” on Wednesday of Koloa Thai Bistro, which offers Thai, Sushi and Hibachi (teppanyaki?) at Koloa Village shopping center … comes right in time for the holidays.
Don’t forget we have the Wailua Bay Creators Fair happening on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn at Wailua Bay … go early for the food, and the great entertainment. The next fair takes place on Jan. 28, 2024.
Neill and Fely Sams, of Orchid Alley, have been smashed with orders for live flowering orchid plants shipped to the mainland for the holidays … no more orders, the deadline’s passed … Happy Winter Solstice that takes place on Thursday!
And Elizabeth Freeman, of the Festival of Lights, (Manu Fonua was out in all that wind trying to get all of the lights working!) said Friday is the final Friday for Santa and Mrs. Claus to appear at the lights at the historic County Building. After Friday, the lights will still be on until after New Year’s Day … we have the Rizal Day meeting with the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club on Dec. 30, too.
