LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School girls basketball walked out of the Kaua‘i High School gymnasium with dual wins on Friday after the latest round of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation games.
The varsity Lady Warriors, looking at a 13-12 hole following the first quarter, rumbled back to a 75-26 win behind Taira Samiano, who fired off four bombs from outside the 3-point arc in the opening stanza toward her game-high 25 points.
Kapa‘a, who over the previous two games roared off the tip off, was limited to just 12 points on Friday, led by Samiano who bucketed two of her four treys in the opening stanza.
Kaua‘i High School got five of its 13-points in the quarter from Kamaile Manibog, including one trey. Kaua‘i answered the Lady Warriors in that frame with another trey from Jazlyn Corpuz.
But then the bottom fell out, as Kapa‘a held Kaua‘i to just single-digit scoring through the remaining three quarters while its offense notched double-digit scoring, including 20 and 24 points in the second and third quarters, respectively.
Following Samiano, Olivia Malafu — being held to just a digit in the first quarter — finished with 21 points in the victory. Joining the Warrior scoring leaders, Skylyn Fagarang added 10 points and Denise Alfonso finished with eight points.
Cheyley Jacobs came alive in the fourth quarter with a pair of treys to end the night with eight points to lead Kaua‘i High School.
Manibog and Corpuz ended the night for the Lady Red Raiders with five points each, and Anaiah Mendez also had five points.
The Kapa‘a Junior Varsity squad closed the books on their encounter with the Red Raiders in a 26-17 win behind Kekehakea Lawhead’s 14 points and support from Ginger Nunez, who added nine points.
Chloe Kaluahine topped the scoring for the Kaua‘i JV team with nine point,s followed by Lily Corpuz adding four.
