‘ELE‘ELE — Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i Impact Manager Tisha Remigio said the foodbank will definitely put in a good word with Santa following the ‘Ele‘ele Elementary School food drive that was spearheaded by the school’s Student Council, representing Grades 3 through 5.
The weeklong food drive, which ended on Friday, resulted in 509 pounds of food that was picked up by Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i.
“This provides more than 400 meals directly to Kaua‘i’s ‘ohana in need,” Remigio said. “There was no incentive for the food drive except to give from the heart. There was no goal set except to ask if everyone participating could bring in at least one item.”
Malyn Miyashiro, the Student Council’s teacher and advisor, said the best part of conducting the food drive was seeing the school come together to support other people.
“Giving from the heart is the best feeling in the world,” Miyashiro said. “It makes youy feel warm and fuzzy inside.”
Remigio said Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i is fortunate for the support from Ele‘ele Elementary School each year.
“Seeing the keiki willingly support the cause is so heartwarming,” Remigio said. “We definitely put in a good word with Santa.”
There are other food drives taking place that benefit the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i, such as the food collection display that is a part of the hotel-wide tradition of decorating the resort at Outrigger Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
The food collection display is in addition to the flagship giving tree where the collected funds will benefit the recovery and relief of people impacted by the Maui wildfires.
The idea for having a giving tree as part of the resort-wide holiday decorations was a suggestion from one of the resort associates.
