NAWILIWILI — The Child and Family Service Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program coordinator Maria Andrews said on Monday the huge amount of food and $1,000 contribution by the Matson Navigation Company is greatly appreciated by Nana’s House in Waimea and the Hale Ho‘omalu house in Kapa‘a.
“Especially now during the holidays, we don’t want anyone to be hungry,” said Patrick Ono, the Kaua‘i District Manager at Matson. “We’ve always arranged to have this donation done during the holidays when families have a lot of other things to worry about instead of getting food on the table.”
Dory Farias, of the CFS Hale Ho‘omalu house, said the contribution was especially well-timed because Wednesday just happens to be pantry day.
“We can always add some of the food provided starting today,” Farias said. “It is going to be welcomed.”
The food was divided so both Nana’s House and Hale Ho‘omalu could share, equally.
Matson is also a major sponsor for the Kaua‘i Hospice Candle Lighting Memorial, which took place on Monday and has two additional memorials planned for Hanapepe and Kilauea.
“This is just because it’s good for the community,” Ono said.
Matson Navigation Company’s association with Hawai‘i started in 1882 when Capt. William Matson sailed his three-masted schooner, the Emma Claudina, from San Francisco to Hilo on the Big Island, carrying 300 tons of food, plantation supplies and general merchandise.
Matson’s primary interest has been carrying freight between the Pacific Coast and Hawai‘i.
Child and Family Service has been champions for Hawai‘i’s families for 124 years in Hawai‘i, working to strengthen families and foster the healthy development of children.
CFS offers statewide support, counseling and therapeutic programs to help individuals and families heal from trauma, prevent abuse and neglect, and break the cycle of generational poverty.
