Contractors Association of Kaua‘i installs new officers

The incoming slate of officers for the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i are joined by the pair of Chinese lions from Tsunami Taiko in the silent auction area at Puakea Golf Course on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023. The inside area for the processional was due to the inclement weather generated by a Kona low that lingered north of the Hawaiian Islands. The slate of incoming CAK officials include (front) Guy Higa, Joni Hamada Patricio, Jamie Kimura, Trinette Kaui, Sharyl Lam Yuen, Alyssa Carveiro, (back) Alicia Leong, Lauren Starner, Jacquelyn Contrades, Cody Nishek, Nathan Konishi. Missing is Thomas-Jay Shigemoto who was tied up with school.

LIHU‘E — The Contractors Association of Kaua‘i (CAK) announced its new slate of officers through the installation of the new leadership during the CAK 66th annual meeting that was held under inclement weather at Puakea Golf Course on Thursday.

Flanked by a pair of Chinese lion dancers from Tsunami Taiko and Joanne Parongao for wishes for a successful year ahead, the officers who were sworn in by retired Judge Gerald Matsunaga included CAK President Trinette Kaui, who is the director of Land Assets for McBryde Resources. She will take over the gavel duties from Nathan Konishi, the co-owner and Responsible Managing Employee of Pacific Blue Construction. Konishi will fill the vice president slot.

Sharyl Lam Yuen, a vice president, and secretary of Grove Farm Company, will fill the CAK’s Secretary position. Alyssa Carveiro, a project engineer and estimator for Earthworks Pacific, will continue her role as treasurer.

Supporting the CAK leadership, the 2024 Board of Directors is made up of Jacquelyn Contrades, a project manager for the Shioi Construction; Joni Hamada-Patricio, co-owner of HAMCO Glass and Glazing; Alicia Leong, the corporate secretary and Responsible Managing Employee of Ka‘iwa Construction; Cody Nishek, the supervisor of landscape operations for Kaua‘i Nursery and Landscaping; Lauren Starner, the office manager and estimator for Kikiaola Construction; Jay Higa, the Kaua‘i branch manager of Service Rentals and Supplies; and Thomas-Jay Shigemoto, an account executive with Hawai‘i Gas.

In addition to the installation of its new officers and directors, CAK also presented four service awards that were done in memory of some of the construction industry leaders from the time when CAK was founded in 1957. The service awards are presented to individuals or companies whose service to the construction industry, CAK and community was deemed “exemplary” by a CAK committee.

The Kaua‘i Community College Carpentry Program earned the Tetsuro “Rosy” Maeda Member of the Year award for its efforts to do outreach in the high schools, working with the Hawai‘i Department of Education, providing college credits to students pursuing trades studies, and for providing hands-on curriculum to Kaua‘i CC students in dry wall and flooring applications at the CAK office.

Kaua‘i Community College was also recognized for its Culinary Arts Department with the Robert H. Rask Community Service Award for its contributions to the community that includes food preparations for the Maui community that is currently being flown over on a weekly basis. The award also acknowledges the culinary arts staff for its efforts at CAK trainings.

Kikiaola Construction received the Kenneth Shioi General Contractor of the Year Award for its support of West Kaua‘i organizations, schools and groups, and providing construction manpower in repairing the CAK office.

Garden Isle Disposal was named the recipient of the Wayne E. Ellis Associate Member of the Year Award for the firm’s support of the CAK.

CAK, also affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders, was established in 1957 as a trade association of licensed contractors, suppliers and businesses affiliated with the construction industry on Kaua‘i.
