LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School girls soccer improved to two wins and no losses following the Red Raiders 5-0 win over Island School in a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation match on Saturday.
Coming off a 1-0 at the half, Kaua‘i rallied its troops to offensive mode and fired off four second-half nets before going into defensive mode in the final two minutes of play showing the new scoreboard that sprouted at the Voyagers field since last year’s season.
Kaua‘i’s Coral Turner broke a 0-0 logjam with exactly 20 minutes showing in the first 40-minute half, and added a goal in the 72nd minute to share the lead scoring spot with Aileah Villatora.
The speedy midfielder notched scores in the 56th and 67th minute against the Voyagers. Carly Dela Cruz scored in the 60th minute to round out the win that gave the Red Raiders back-to-back wins following a 2-1 vicotry on Thursday against Kapa‘a at rain-soaked Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
During that contest, Red Raider sisters Keira and Leila Caoagas each found the back of the net. Kapa‘a’s Sienna Yamashita found the net at the 41st minute.
Kapa‘a picked up a 4-1 win over Waimea High School on Saturday when they traveled to Hanapepe Stadium.
Sienna Yamashita, keeping Kapa‘a from a shutout during the makeup game against Kaua‘i on Thursday, fired up the Lady Warriors with a pair of goals in the win on Saturday.
Yamashita lit up the scoreboard in the 12th minute with her goal, and iced her offensive showing in the second half with a net in the 65th minute. Shiver McCann hit the net in the 17th minute, and a goal in the 50th minute by Liliwai Keahiolalo rounded out the victory.
Waimea’s Kendra Knapp penetrated traffic in the final minute of play to score the Menehunes sole goal in the 79th minute.
The Lady Warriors victory brings Kapa‘a to a one-win, one-loss record, the same as Island School which beat Waimea 2-1 on Wednesday, Nov. 29, on goals by McKenna Kerry and Lily Keller. Waimea got its goal from Kendra Knapp.
Waimea comes to Vidinha Stadium on Wednesday to match up against Kaua‘i starting at 4 p.m. Kapa‘a will come over to Island School on Thursday to face the Voyagers starting at 4 p.m.
The boys soccer teams will make their initial appearance for this year on Tuesday, when Waimea takes on Kaua“i in a single match starting at 4 p.m. On the same day, Island School will travel to the BJB Sports Complex to face Kapa‘a in a 4 p.m. kickoff.
