KEKAHA — Ka‘ikea Miyashiro, ‘Aina Miranda and Aya Miranda were winners of the 1K race at the first-ever St. Theresa School Great Turkey Trot, which unfolded at the Kekaha school’s campus and neighborhood.
DJ Adams, Noah Balmores, Peyton Siliado III and Keith Perry snagged the winners list of the 5K race at the event designed to help raise funds for a new playground project, which comes in at a projected $125,483.
“This event was inspired by our Physical Education teacher Melissa Moreno, and the impressive running our classes are doing out on the field each day,” said STS Principal Wendy Castillo.
“Her emphasis on fitness led me to consider a fitness-based fundraiser that resulted in the Great Turkey Trot idea. Our office manager, Camille Hesapene added on a craft fair and food truck component so the event could reach more people.”
Following the run by 86 runners in clear, crisp and bright conditions, the local crafters and food truck gathered on the STS campus.
“It was a fun run followed by relaxation, shopping, and eating ono lunches,” STS said. “Along the route through the town of Kekaha, family, friends and community members turned out to cheer the runners on. It was a wonderful morning for families and the community to be healthy, have fun and celebrate just being together.”
Susan Ines was announced the winner of the Thanksgiving Lucky Drawing basket filled with goodies for the upcoming holidays.
“I am dedicated to raising funds for our new playground,” Castillo said. “This is a project that is much-needed by the school and will undoubtedly benefit this school. We will continue with our fundraisers and sponsorship recruitment until our goal is met. St. Theresa School is a special place and worthy of all of our efforts.”
The Playground Renovation Project will be a major improvement to the campus, providing a safe, engaging, and attractive structure in which learners of all ages can interact, states the school’s website.
The Playground Renovation Project will be funded through school fundraising like the recent Turkey Trot, grants and private sponsors. Located at 8311 Kaumuali‘i Highway, adjacent to the St. Theresa Church, the school will be accepting registration for the next school year starting on Dec. 1.
