KAPA‘A — Three Kapa‘a High School student athletes — Rhea Furtado, Kailee Gorospe,and Hailey Gibson — signed their respective Letters of Intent to play softball in what Kumu Jade Waialeale Battad described as “the next chapter in their young lives.”
KAPA‘A — Three Kapa‘a High School student athletes — Rhea Furtado, Kailee Gorospe,and Hailey Gibson — signed their respective Letters of Intent to play softball in what Kumu Jade Waialeale Battad described as “the next chapter in their young lives.”
Furtado put the pen to the letter for the California State University Northridge Matadors; Gorospe agreed to play for Edmonds College Titans in Seattle, Washington; and Gibson opted to stay close to home by playing for the University of Hawai‘i Hilo Vulcans.
They signed their letters during a short ceremony before proud parents, friends and fellow student athletes, including the Kapa‘a Warriors Division I football team, and the yet-to-be-formed girls soccer team.
Proud father and coach Micah Furtado said the girls met as Diamonds softball players and grew up on the Diamonds softball field.
The common thread between the girls commitment is being close to the ocean. Furtado’s school choice is just outside Los Angeles, while Gorospe’s school selection is close to Puget Sound, and Gibson’s choice is “like staying home.”
The setting was not the Sheraton Waikiki where more than two dozen student athletes put pen to paper on the National Day of Signing. Kaua‘i’s part took place at the Kapa‘a High School softball field where quick tents sprouted in the right outfield to accommodate the girls signing and post-signing congratulation and well wishes.
