William Val Badua
William Val Badua, 72, passed away on Oct. 26, 2023, at his home in Lihu‘e. He was born on Dec. 22, 1950, in Waimea, Kaua‘i. Val was a Waimea High School graduate, Vietnam War Veteran, avid surfer, and skilled salt maker. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local #3 and worked in the construction industry for 35 years, retiring in 2007.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mabel and William Badua, brothers Leonard and Milton Badua.
He is survived by his wife Debra, son ‘Aukai Badua (Vicky Wolfe), daughter Gabrielle (Daniel) Del Toro, grandchildren Waiola, Kupa‘a, Sanoe and Haweo, sisters Stella (Aaron) Ho‘okano of Honolulu and Michelle San Nicholas of Guam.
A celebration of life, with dinner to follow, will be held on Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihue from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will occur at a later date. The family requests casual or aloha attire and welcomes flowers.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the first responders, Reverend Carolyn Miura, Kaua‘i Hospice, and the Garden Island Mortuary.

Waldemar John Contrades Sr.
Waldemar John Contrades Sr. passed away peacefully at his home in Anahola on Oct. 14, 2023, at the age of 91. He was born in Lihu‘e on Nov. 7, 1931, and retired from Citizens Utilities where he worked as a Lineman.
He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Ruby Contrades, sister Myrtle (Frank) Napoleon, brothers Peter (Anita) Contrades, Ervin (Mercy) Contrades, sister-in-law Emmaleen Contrades, great-grandsons Keanu Saito, Kendrick Fejeder and great-great-granddaughter Naleiha Sanay-Wong.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Patsy Contrades, sons Waldemar Contrades Jr., Frederick Milton Contrades, daughters Leila (John) Kaneholani, Ruby (Floyd) Sugimura, Lola Rodriguez, brothers Daniel Contrades, Joseph (Betty Jane) Contrades, Lester (Richard) Contrades, sisters Imogene Richards, Alicia (Tony) Fernandez, 17 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary in Koloa. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., services to follow. Burial service will be held at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe at 1 p.m. Casual aloha attire is suggested.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and mahalo to Veterans Administration, Bayada Home Care, Kaua‘i Hospice, and to all his caring physicians, for the excellent services they provided which allowed him to live a life of quality. Mahalo is also extended to Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary and the Office of Veterans Services for their assistance.
Dominic Martin Murguia
Dominic Martin Murguia passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at the age of 59 years old. He was born on July 12, 1964, at Oceanside, California.
He was preceded in death by father Stanley Murguia and stepfather Bob Fox.
He is survived by daughters Brooke (Abraham) Paleo of Oceanside, California, Brittany (Nate Merkle) Murguia of Oceanside, California, grandchildren Malia Paleo, Naiya Paleo, Coral Merkle, mother Josephine Fox, brothers Matthew Murguia of Aiken, South Carolina, Joe (Lani) Murguia of Reno, Nevada, sisters Debbie Arii of Hanapepe, Kaua‘i, Michelle Murguia of Koloa, Kaua‘i, Rory (Dan Schmaltz) Murguia of Aiken, South Carolina, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jeanette Mae Ferreira Poe
Jeanette Mae Ferreira Poe, of Lihu‘e, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 83. She was a retired registered nurse of Mahelona Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edward Ferreira and Madeline Abreu Ortiz, son Robert Alexander Iida Jr., grandson Robert Alexander Iida III, sister Dulinda (Louis) Maria of Ewa, O‘ahu, and Isaac Poe Jr.
She is survived by son Michael (Terri Yadao) Iida of Lihu‘e, daughter Theresa Lynn Iida-Mersberg of Waimea, raised grandson Robert Iida and great-grandson Lopaka Iida of Lihu‘e, sisters Irene Randall of Kekaha, Charlene Bukoski of Kapa‘a, Emily Ferreira Guajardo of Arizona, Barbara Garcia of Lihu‘e, Elizabeth Kane of Koloa, brother Edward Ferreira Jr. of Honolulu, 12 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life services will be held on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
The public may visit with family from 9:30 a.m. with services to follow. Scattering of her ashes will be held at a later date.

Herman Hajime Arbilera
Herman Hajime Arbilera, 67, passed away on Oct. 3, 2023, at The Queen’s Medical Center battling illness. He was born on Dec. 12, 1955, in Waimea, Kaua‘i. He moved to Maui ending of 2001.
He was very passionate about working as a drywall specialist for many years. Loved surfing, walking on the beach, working in the yard, and most of all spending time with loved ones BBQing and talking stories.
He is survived by his lifelong partner Wendy Fulfs, sons Hart (Cindy), Dayne (Mynalei), Hyran (Kelly), daughter Destiny (Alvin), seven granddaughters and four grandsons, sisters Gail, Vivian, numerous nieces and nephews.
A private ceremony and spreading of ashes will be held for close family and friends at Kekaha Cemetery (Park Hook Tong) on Saturday, Dec. 2, starting at 8 a.m.
Aloha Mortuary on O‘ahu assisted the family with arrangements.
