LIHU‘E — A free workshop on Wednesday will help caregivers with loved ones suffering from dementia how to better understand the condition and learn skills to deal with challenging behaviors.
Sponsored by AARP Hawai‘i, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Kaua‘i Agency on Aging, the in-person Positive Approach to Dementia Care will be held at Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Participants must register to attend the sessions, and select a lunch option by visiting aarp.org/local, or the AARP Hawai‘i Facebook page. Registration can also be done by calling 877-926-8300.
The workshop will cover “Normal vs. Not Normal Aging: Understanding the Difference” and “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia Care: Recognizing Unmet Needs.” The workshop will be led by Dorothy Colby, a certified Positive Approach to Dementia Care trainer and national mentor. Pat Bemis, an AARP volunteer and certified trainer, will help facilitate the workshop.
During the first session, caregivers will learn to recognize and intervene effectively when behavioral challenges take place, and to develop skills to better approach and c0nnect with dementia patients.
The second session will look lat physical and emotional needs that can cause challenging behavior, and teach techniques to connect and comfort loved ones with dementia.
