HANAPEPE — Kahili, or Royal Hawaiian featherwork, creators can learn, create and take home their own kahili on Saturday at the free Kahili workshop at Hanapepe Public Library starting at 9 a.m.
The workshop will be led by Kumu Ka‘eo, the cultural practitioner who led the popular Hawaiiana Sense of Place workshops during the Koloa Plantation Days celebration back in July.
Kahili are traditional symbols of Hawaiian ali‘i, or royalty created by the chief’s favored attendants that specialize in gental removal and sacred use of precious feathers of native birds that are now extinct or endangered.
Supported by the Kaua‘i Forest Bird Recovery Project, the number of kits available is 20 kits funded by the American Bird Conservancy.
Preregistration is highly encouraged due to the limited number of kits and can be done online at www.librarieshawaii.org. Interested people can also register by visiting Hanapepe Public Library during its business hours or by calling 808-335-8418.
Refreshments are courtesy of the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library.
