KALAHEO — The Kalaheo Dental Group’s Halloween Candy Buyback has been extended to include the group’s participation in the Kaua‘i Veterans Celebration on Saturday at the lawn of the Historic County Building.
“This is the first year we’re participating with the veterans,” said Johanna Jacob, the Kalaheo Dental Group’s director of operations, on Wednesday afternoon. “The candy buyback has been extended. We usually have a container available at the desk for people who miss the buyback right after Halloween.”
Under terms of the buyback, people can bring in unopened candy and receive the buyback at a rate of a $1 a pound to a maximum $5 ceiling.
“We’ll be having a booth and all the weigh-in equipment to help people. All of the bought candy will be shipped to Operation Shoebox — they’re new, this year, too — by The UPS Store where the Operation Shoebox people will take our candy, inspect it for safety, and repack it for shipment to our military stationed overseas,” Jacob said.
“We’re even buying candy from those people that did not have enough trick-or-treaters and have candy left over.”
Jacob described the activity on Wednesday, the day following Halloween, as brisk with kids coming in from about 3 p.m. with candy.
“It’s hard to tell when we’re going to be busy. But, usually after school is when it gets the busiest,” Jacob said.
“Additionally, those kids bringing in candy have an opportunity to earn a Small Fry gift card that will be given away at a drawing to be held later. Also, the amount of candy we got will have to wait until we bring everything to The UPS Store.”
The Kaua‘i Veterans Celebration is presented by the Kaua‘i Veterans Council on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature a special mahalo from the Rice Street Business Association for transitioning to a day of celebration and decommissioning of the parade.
The day features keiki rides, an assortment of food trucks, artisan vendors and veterans services, including free food for all veterans. Live entertainment includes Mary Lardizabal and the Kapa‘a Middle School Choir, Cruz Control, Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin and the award-winning Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala and Kapena.
