LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School 4-shooter boys air rifle team, and the Waimea High School 4-shooter girls air rifle team earned the distinction of becoming the first Central Pacific Bank Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air rifle champions on Saturday, Oct. 21, during the CPB KIF air rifle championships contested at the Kaua‘i High School range.
Led by the High Point posted by Jacob Andres, the Red Raiders boys team, including Trey Nakamura, Brayden Bartholomew and Andrew Sadamitsu finished the day outpointing the three other schools with 2,047 points.
On the girls range, Waimea High School’s 4-shooter girls team was led by Zoey Ruiz posting a day’s high of 511 points to finish the day with 1,976 points, just 32 points behind Kaua‘i High School girls, who finished with 1,944 points led by Red Raider sharpshooter Sharba Holi who posted 497 points.
These championship teams earn qualifications to the Hawai‘i Army National Guard Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Air Riflery championships on Oct. 31 at Neal Blaidell Center on O‘ahu.
According to Retired Col. Vincent Freeman, the Range Officer at Waimea, Menehune Fredy Padamada will be joining the Kaua‘i High School boys team with an at-large berth after finishing sixth place in the KIF.
The Waimea High School girls team, including Ruiz, Lee Ann Saniatan, Rochelle Uri and Trislyn Martinez will have Kaua‘i’s Sharba Holi joining the girls at the state competition with an at-large berth after finishing fifth in the KIF.
“On behalf of the entire KIF Air Riflery ‘ohana, I would like to congratulate and express pride and appreciation for an outstanding, highly-competitive season conducted with professionalism, sportsmanship and aloha by athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters,” Freeman said. “We wish all the best to the KIF shooters, who qualified for the state championships at the end of the month.”
