Yau Loy Wong
Yau Loy Wong passed away Oct. 10, 2023, at Queens Hospital in Honolulu. He was born Nov. 19, 1931, in the Hanalei valley.
He lived an active life until the end. Was enrolled in the army during the Korean War. Loved fishing, crabbing, and making fishing throw nets. His knowledge about boats was impeccable, and was a huge animal lover, especially dogs.
He retired from the Boeing company in Everett, Washington, in 1989 and moved back to Kaua‘i to enjoy his retirement fishing. He enjoyed fishing in Ketchikan, Alaska for years as well.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Marla Wong, son Robert (Trinh) Wong, brother Frederick (Vallendee) Wong, sisters Mew Ung Lee, Mew Lin Ching, Clara (Gordon) Wong, granddaughters Sonora, Chelsey, Tram, many nieces and nephews. As well as his loving dogs, Ziggy and Quigley who will also miss him terribly.
He was preceded in death by his son Steve Wong, sister Margaret Yee and brother Arthur Wong.
He was a kind, sweet man who made people smile when he walked in. Honest, hard working and independent. Always there to help others in need. He will be missed by many that knew him.
Private services were held. Ashes to be scattered at a later date.
Romualdo ‘Rhomy’ Bumanglag Basilio
Romualdo “Rhomy” Bumanglag Basilio passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family by his side on Oct. 10, 2023, at the age of 70. He was born on Feb. 14, 1953, in San Nicolas, Philippines. He worked at Kiahuna, Sheraton and Hyatt, Kaua‘i. He retired from McBryde and State of Hawai‘i, Judiciary. He also managed his own Janitorial Family Business.
He was preceded in death by his son Michael Basilio, his parents Eulalio and Alejandra Basilio, his in-laws Vincente and Eufemia Pablo, his brothers Cornelio (Clarita), Teofilo ((D) Salvacio), Felino (Dionicia), and Florencio ((D)Milagros, Bonnie).
He is survived by his wife Marcelina “Cely” Basilio, daughter Rhocel (Keneke), granddaughter Gabrielle M. Basilio-Valdez, his brother Robert Sr. (Esther), his sisters Lucena (Agrifino) Bunsaan, Angela (Patrick) Tayamen, Caridad ((D) Victorino) Villanueva and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit the family on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., service at 10 a.m., and burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Dr. Paul Katsuto Hanashiro, MD

Dr. Paul K. Hanashiro MD, of Pasadena, California, was born to plantation workers in Kekaha on the island of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, as one of eight siblings. He graduated from Waimea High School and attended University of Hawai‘i. He finished his pre-med studies at the University of Indiana in 1953 and graduated from Maryland School of Medicine in 1957. He spent two years in the USAF as a medical officer based in Tokyo before completing his residency in internal medicine and cardiology at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago.
During his residency, he met his wife, Maxine (deceased 2005) who was obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Nursing; and they married in 1966. They moved to California where he held a full-time academic and clinical position at LA County’s USC Medical Center and USC School of Medicine Shock Trauma Research Unit. At the request of a colleague, he relocated to University of Maryland where he continued research and became the first clinical director of their Shock Trauma Center. He moved back to California to run a research program in atherosclerosis at USC where he became an Associate Professor of Medicine.
In 1981 he took a position at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago as Medical Director of Emergency Services until he retired at age 71.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer McGinley MD and son, John Hanashiro, as well as his sister, Elaine Ganeko.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at Waimea United Church of Christ, 3100 Makeke Rd., Waimea, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Janet Haffner
We will be celebrating the life of Janet Haffner on Monday, Nov. 6, at the Aloha Church. We invite all who loved this remarkable lady to come out and celebrate with us! She was the best Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunty and friend.
Janet Caberto Aquino Haffner, of Kekaha, passed from this life to the next on Aug. 25, 2023, at the age of 80. She was born Oct. 20, 1942, at McBryde Hospital and spent almost all of her life on Kaua‘i where she was loved and well respected by everyone that had the privilege of knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Julian Aquino, second husband Charles Haffner, parents Gregorio and Eulogio Caberto, brother Billy Caberto, sister Apolonia Basquez, sister Marina Igne and grandson Joshua Aquino.
She is survived by her sister Georgia Fernandez, her children John (Ester) Aquino from Austin, Texas, Janelle (Eric) Moriguchi of Kekaha, Hawai‘i, Jeanno (Rebecca) Aquino of Harlingen, Texas, Cher Ulanday of Koloa, Hawai‘i, with numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren scattered throughout the islands, and the mainland.
Everywhere Janet went she brought joy and many just thought she was love personified. She had a smile that lit up the darkest room and her laughter was contagious. She made the best pickled mango on the islands and was an avid football fan, but what gives her family the most comfort is the genuine relationship she had with God. She spoke to Him several times a day and spent a lot of time reading His Word and told her family that her greatest wish for each one within her family and network of friends was that they come to know Jesus Christ in a very real and intimate way, as both Savior and Lord. She will be missed but will never be forgotten. Her legacy of faith will live on and the family looks forward to the time they will reunite on heaven’s side.
Janet’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Aloha Church. The doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the service will begin at 10 a.m. Pastor Vill Galiza, Pastor Frank Puni, and her son Pastor Jeanno Aquino will be officiating.
If you have a great memory of Janet, the family would be grateful if you would like to share it. After the service, everyone is encouraged to stay for refreshments. Aloha Church is located at 3-3400 Kuhio Highway in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. Please join us for this time of celebration. The family encourages everyone to come dressed in casual attire.
Waldemar John Contrades Sr.
Waldemar John Contrades Sr. passed away peacefully at his home in Anahola on Oct. 14, 2023, at the age of 91. He was born in Lihu‘e on Nov. 7, 1931, and retired from Citizens Utilities where he worked as a Lineman.
He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Ruby Contrades, sister Myrtle (Frank) Napoleon, brothers Peter (Anita) Contrades, Ervin (Mercy) Contrades, sister-in-law Emmaleen Contrades, great-grandsons Keanu Saito, Kendrick Fejeder and great-great-granddaughter Naleiha Sanay-Wong.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Patsy Contrades, sons Waldemar Contrades Jr., Frederick Milton Contrades, daughters Leila (John) Kaneholani, Ruby (Floyd) Sugimura, Lola Rodriguez, brothers Daniel Contrades, Joseph (Betty Jane) Contrades, Lester (Richard) Contrades, sisters Imogene Richards, Alicia (Tony) Fernandez, 17 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary in Koloa. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., services to follow. Burial service will be held at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe at 1 p.m. Casual aloha attire is suggested.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and mahalo to Veterans Administration, Bayada Home Care, Kaua‘i Hospice, and to all his caring physicians, for the excellent services they provided which allowed him to live a life of quality. Mahalo is also extended to Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary and the Office of Veterans Services for their assistance.
