Dr. Paul Katsuto Hanashiro, MD

Dr. Paul K. Hanashiro MD, of Pasadena, California, was born to plantation workers in Kekaha on the island of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, as one of eight siblings. He graduated from Waimea High School and attended University of Hawai‘i. He finished his pre-med studies at the University of Indiana in 1953 and graduated from Maryland School of Medicine in 1957. He spent two years in the USAF as a medical officer based in Tokyo before completing his residency in internal medicine and cardiology at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago.
During his residency, he met his wife, Maxine (deceased 2005) who was obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and they married in 1966. They moved to California where he held a full-time academic and clinical position at LA County’s USC Medical Center and USC School of Medicine Shock Trauma Research Unit. At the request of a colleague, he relocated to University of Maryland where he continued research and became the first clinical director of their Shock Trauma Center. He moved back to California to run a research program in atherosclerosis at USC where he became an Associate Professor of Medicine.
In 1981 he took a position at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago as Medical Director of Emergency Services until he retired at age 71.
He is survived by his daughter Jennifer McGinley MD, son John Hanashiro, as well as his sister, Elaine Ganeko.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at Waimea United Church of Christ, 3100 Makeke Rd., Waimea, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Richard Hoapili Ka‘a‘a
Richard Hoapili Ka‘a‘a, 93, of Anahola, Kaua‘i, rode into his last sunset on Oct. 20, 2023, at Wilcox Medical Center in Lïhu‘e, Kaua‘i. He was born in Ma‘alaea, Maui, Hawai‘i to his parents, William Kauwe‘äina Ka‘a‘a, Sr. and Rose Kailimai Ka‘a‘a on Jan. 20, 1930. Richard retired from Otis Elevator as an Elevator Journeyman Mechanic.
He was predeceased by his parents, his oldest brother, William Kauwe‘äina Ka‘a‘a, Jr., his sister-in-law, Myrtle Kanakaole Ka‘a‘a, and his grandson, Francis Ka‘imipono Ka‘a‘a.
Richard is survived by his wife Maybelle (“Toni”) Ka‘a‘a, his brother Melvin Ka‘a‘a (Ornetta), his sister Melvyna Gomes, his sons and daughter from his first wife, ‘Iwalani Briones: Manuel Ross (Sandy), Thomas Hoapili, Errol Glen, Mark Francis (Nälani), Clyde “Butch” (Marian) Ka‘a‘a, Glenette Heart (TJ), step-son Paul M.K. Ho‘okano, step-daughter Laurine K. Entendencia (Eddie, Jr.), 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, three step-grandsons, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation: 9 to 11 a.m.; Service: 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Kapa‘a 2nd Ward, 4561 Ohia Street, Kapa’a Hawai‘i. Interment: 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, at the Veterans Cemetery, Makawao, Maui, Hawai‘i.
Donald Wayne Duarte
Donald Wayne Duarte passed away on Sept. 20, 2023, at the age of 88 years old. He was born on Dec. 13, 1934, in Koloa. He was a heavy-duty tire repair technician, and a veteran of the U.S. armed services.
He was preceded in death by parents Caesar and Rosalina Duarte, brothers Caesar Jr., Ronald Duarte, sister Elizabeth Duarte and son-in-law Clifford Rafanan.
He is survived by wife Elizabeth “Betty” Duarte of Anahola, sons Donald (Joyce) Duarte Jr. of Maui, Keith (Michelle) Duarte of Maui, Kenneth (Irene) Duarte of Maui, daughters Lisa Rafanan of Maui, Donette Duarte of Anahola, 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i on Oct. 27, 2023. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m., celebration of life at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at the Hanapepe Veterans Cemetery.
The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

Henry Toshio Hamada Marian Chiyako Hamada
The Hamada family grieves the loss of their parents, Henry Toshio Hamada and Marian Chiyako Hamada. Henry passed away on Aug. 21, 2023, at the age of 93 and Marian passed away on Oct. 12, 2023, at the age of 87. Both passed away peacefully in their home in Kapa‘a surrounded by their loving family.
Henry and Marian met at the Diamond Head Deaf and Blind school in Honolulu and were married for 67 years. They started their lives together in Wailua Houselots and retired in Kapa‘a. They both enjoyed working the land producing food and flowers in their retirement years. They cherished being grandparents and great-grandparents.
Henry is preceded in passing by his parents Kanichi and Chieno Hamada, brothers George, James, Wallace, Albert, Samuel, and sisters Ruth and Nellie.
Marian is preceded in passing by her parents Kiyoshi and Sadako Sueoka, sister Jean Fukumori, and brothers Harold and Chester Sueoka. Both Henry and Marian are preceded in passing by their granddaughter Shelby Hamada.
Both Henry and Marian are survived by their children Kelvin (Dawn) Hamada of Honolulu, Rex (Suzie) Hamada of Mililani, Susan (Lance) Kubota of Kapa‘a, Stella (Jeff) Daniels of Seattle, grandchildren Devin (Marci) Hamada, Courtney (Devin) Hamada, Nicole Kubota, Shantelle (Adam) Morris, Heather Kubota, Jarrett (Trish) Hamada, Kira Daniels, Jana (Jesse) Colandrea, Jordan (Jessica) Chun, Jared (Brandi) Chun, Joslyn (Casey) Hamada, great-grandchildren Evan Morris, Remy Morris, Connor Morris, Micah Morris, Raiden Hamada, Mitzi Kubota, Sadame Kubota, Ethan Chun, Malachi Chun, Chloe Colandrea, Emma Colandrea, Liam Mira, Tailea Chun, Tahia Chun, Kole Hamada, Dax Hamada, Marian’s sister, Doris (Roy Yamashita) Kimura, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Relatives are welcomed to celebrate Henry and Marian’s life at the Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at 9 a.m. Burial to follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.

Yau Loy Wong
Yau Loy Wong passed away Oct. 10, 2023, at Queens Hospital in Honolulu. He was born Nov. 19, 1931, in the Hanalei valley.
He lived an active life until the end. Was enrolled in the army during the Korean War. Loved fishing, crabbing, and making fishing throw nets. His knowledge about boats was impeccable, and was a huge animal lover, especially dogs.
He retired from the Boeing company in Everett, Washington, in 1989 and moved back to Kaua‘i to enjoy his retirement fishing. He enjoyed fishing in Ketchikan, Alaska for years as well.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Marla Wong, son Robert (Trinh) Wong, brother Frederick (Vallendee) Wong, sisters Mew Ung Lee, Mew Lin Ching, Clara (Gordon) Wong, granddaughters Sonora, Chelsey, Tram, many nieces and nephews. As well as his loving dogs, Ziggy and Quigley who will also miss him terribly.
He was preceded in death by his son Steve Wong, sister Margaret Yee and brother Arthur Wong.
He was a kind, sweet man who made people smile when he walked in. Honest, hard working and independent. Always there to help others in need. He will be missed by many that knew him.
Private services were held. Ashes to be scattered at a later date.
Mae Sumi Narimatsu
Mae Sumi Narimatsu, age 72, of Hilo, passed away on Sept. 25, 2023, at Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, on May 23, 1951. Mae was a first grade teacher at Waiakeawaena Elementary School and member of Waiakeawaena’s Aloha Committee and Parent Teacher Association, Hawai‘i State Teachers Association and National Education Association.
She was preceded in death by parents Toshio and Elsie Kinue Serizawa.
She is survived by husband Clifford Narimatsu of Hilo, son Chad (Jane) Narimatsu of Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i, daughter Kristia (Martin) Narimatsu of Hilo, brother, Mike (Elaine) Serizawa of Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, sister Sarah Ferreira of Hilo, in-laws Naomi Lum Ho of Hilo, Richard (Laraine) Narimatsu of Honolulu, Ronald (Sharon) Narimatsu, Eugene (Gwen) Narimatsu and Willie Narimatsu of Hilo, Noella Narimatsu of Honolulu, four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo on Nov. 4, 2023. Public visitation from 3:30 to 5 p.m. with memorial service to follow. A graveside urn committal service will be held at Hawai‘i Veterans Cemetery No.2 pavilion on Nov. 6, 2023, at 8:30 a.m. The family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.
