KAPA‘A — A Kapa‘a man was identified on Wednesday, Oct. 23, as the deceased found floating in the water off Waikaea Canal.
Kevin Kaui, 49, was located in the water on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in an area also known as Lihi Boat Ramp.
“We would like to thank the public for their help in identifying Mr. Kaui and for the information we’ve received so far in this investigation,” said Kennison Nagahisa, acting captain of the Kaua‘i Police Department’s (KPD_ Investigative Services Bureau, in a statement on Wednesday.
“We offer our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones during this very difficult time.”
An autopsy was completed after Kaui’s body was pulled from the water. But it was described as “unrecognizable due to the advanced state of decomposition,” and local authorities turned to the public for help in identifying the body.
It was not clear how long Kaui had been in water, nor how local authorities were able to identify the body. An investigation remains ongoing, but foul play is not a suspected factor at this time.
People with information about the body are urged to call KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711. People wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i at 808-246-8300 or submit a tip at cskauai.org.
