LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School boys and girls teams won the latest round of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air rifle matches hosted by Island School at the Kaua‘i High School range on Saturday.
“The girls match could not have been any closer with Kaua‘i High School girls edging Waimea High School girls by one point out of a possible 2,400 points for first place,” said Waimea High School Range Director Vincent Freeman.
Led by its Taylee Yoshimoto, finishing with the day’s second highest points, who marked 493 points, the Kaua‘i High School wahine marked 1,953 points to nudge past Waimea, who finished with 1,952 points. Waimea was led by the day’s best girls shooter Lee Ann Saniatan, who pointed 500 points.
Mia Javellana’s 453 points led the Island School to third place with 1,715 points, followed by the Kapa‘a High School girls whose two shooters totalled 799 points.
On the boys range, Kaua‘i High School’s Jacob Andres finished with the best score at 533 point to lead the Red Raider to a first place finish at 2,024 points.
Rhomsen Fermin, finishing with 489 points, led the Menehune to 1,811 points and second place, followed by the Island School totalling 1,581 points, and Kapa‘a rounding out the leaderboard at 1,760 points.
The final KIF air rifle matches will take place on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at the Kaua‘i High School range.
“The Waimea High School girls team and the Kaua‘i High School boys team lead the four-shooter competition in their respective categories,” Freeman said. “In addition to determining the team state qualifying teams, one boy, and one girl at-large state qualifier will be determined following the results of the KIF final match.”
The Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Air Riflery 2023 Championships will contest on Oct. 31 at the Neal Blaisdell Center on O‘ahu.
