LIHU‘E — Tuesday night is the second round showdown between the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation First Round holder Island School girls volleyball team and the Kapa‘a High School girls, which has won two matches into the second round in strong fashion.
The Lady Warriors wrapped up a straight set win over Waimea High School on Friday at Bernice Hundley Gym on the Kapa‘a High School campus. Scores for that contest were 25-21, 25-17, and 25-17.
Official scores for the contest between the Kaua‘i High School girls volleyball team and Island School Voyagers were not available at press deadline time. However, a check with KIF official Merrill Carvalho, doing scorekeeper duty at Saturday’s KIF football games, indicated the Voyagers took the Red Raiders in straight sets.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Waimea High School junior varsity girls, winners of a Oct. 10 encounter against the Voyagers — 25-6, 25-15 and 25-20 — continued its winning ways by sweeping the Warriors 25-18, 25-19 and 25-22.
Waimea varsity, losing to the Voyagers on Oct. 10 in four sets, jumped out to an early 11-8 advantage over Kapa‘a behind six unanswered points by Kalia Yaris in the service block. Yaris helped herself on the string of points by nailing a pair of point-getting whacks.
The Warriors responded when Kailee-Ann Baltazar served up four unanswered point to a 12-11 Kapa‘a advantage.
Waimea answered with a Kai Kai San Agustin hammer to knot the contest at 12-12 before Kapa‘a’s setter Taira Samiano served up six unanswered points, enhanced with a Kanoe Haneberg hammer for the 18-12 go-ahead that was never answered.
Samiano’s strong showing in the service block was joined by Ku‘uipomakamae Hunt and Sierra Summer in the following sets to keep Waimea off balance through the three-set win.
Waimea, which suffered a four-set loss to the Voyagers on Oct. 10, will host Kaua‘i High School on Tuesday at Clem Gomes Gym, while the Voyagers host the Lady Warriors at Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus.
The JV contests at both sites serve up from 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity matches.
