LIHU‘E — Jean Souza, the on-site manager for Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery, found a good fall break activity that is free, participation required, and educational on Saturday at Kukui Grove Center.
“In celebration of the current Hokule‘a Moananulakea pan-Pacific voyage, a free wa‘a, or canoe model building event will take place on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery at the Kukui Grove Center,” Souza said. “The make-and-take activity will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to all ages, keiki through adult. There is no registration required.”
With the help of longtime maritime educator Kapena Steve Soltysik, who also crewed aboard the Hokule‘a support vessel on one of the Hokule‘a voyages, a star compass will be laid out inside the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery to better understand wayfinding and navigation without the aid of modern instruments.
Model wa‘a makers will have the opportunity to sand, decorate sails, and assemble their craft. Once assembled, the completed wa‘a will have an opportunity to float through activity stations set up outside the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery as Soltysik speaks on waves, currents and other ocean conditions that impact wa‘a.
