PUHI — Kaua‘i High School and Waimea High School air riflery teams won their respective series on Saturday, Sept. 30, during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air rifle matches held at the Island School range.
The Red Raiders’ Jacob Andres led the Kaua‘i boys win with the day’s best round at 252 points, as the Red Raiders outpointed the Voyagers 1,204 to 963 in the team competition, where the top five shooters from each school shot for competition points. Top marksman for the Voyagers was Azteca Ramos-Valdovinos, who finished with 214 points.
On the girls range, Kaua‘i outpointed the Voyagers 1,157 points to 1,042 points behind the high point of Sharba Holi, who finished with 239 points. Top sharpshooter for the Voyagers was Kaili Kaui, who ended with 224 points.
The Menehune swept the Warriors, as the girls finished with 1,215 team points compared with the Lady Warriors who fielded just three sharpshooters and totaled 664 points. Top Kapa‘a sharpshooter honors belonged to Xiani Carbreiros, who finished with 225 points. Lee Ann Sanitan took top scores for the Menehune with 255 points.
On the boys range, Waimea outpointed Island School 1,145 to 881. Waimea was led by Fredy Padamada with 249 points. The Menehune’s top team shooter, Masao Fontana, finished with 236 points. Gian Garawan added 235 points.
Top shooter honors for the Warriors belonged to Tristan Urbian, who ended with 238 points.
With the Saturday results, the Waimea girls lead the league standings with three wins and no losses and six points. Kaua‘i girls follow with two wins and one loss for five points. Island School wahine have one win and two losses for four points. The Kapa‘a girls have no wins and three losses for three points.
Kaua‘i boys lead the standings with three wins and no losses for six points, followed by Waimea with two wins and one loss for five points. Island School follows with one win and two losses for four points. Kapa‘a has no wins and three losses for three points.
Vincent Freeman, the range officer for Waimea High School, said the next KIF Air Riflery match will be hosted by Kaua‘i High School on Saturday. The range becomes active at 10 a.m.
All four schools will be fielding four shooters per gender in a three-position firing 20 shots format. This is similar to the state level competition and will be adopted in the final KIF matches to allow the state qualifiers to adjust to the state level.
The top scoring four-shooter team by gender will earn four points, while the second, third, and fourth place teams will earn points of three, two and one, respectively toward the KIF championship.
